Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a golf course. Examination of aerial photographs had indicated that a complex of soilmarks which may have represented buried archaeological features lay within the proposal area. Thirty three sites within a 3km radius of the site had been recorded on the SMR; these ranged from surface finds of prehistoric flintwork to railway structures and quarries. Trial trenching of the area corresponding to the soilmarks revealed that they were largely of natural origin, resulting from variations in the sub-surface geology. However, one group of archaeological features was identified. These appeared to have related either to a grubbed out hedge or to a prehistoric pit alignment. Further archaeological remains were recorded outside the soilmark area. The first to be identified was a small cremation cemetery, where cremated bone was recovered from small truncated pits. Owing to the absence of pottery and other diagnostic artefacts from these features, it was not possible to date the cemetery at the time of the report, although radiocarbon dating of charcoal was to be undertaken. Another complex of features consisted of a two-phased ditch which at least partially enclosed the higher ground of Leacet Hill. Post-holes, a large pit and a stone-lined drainage gully were found in close association with the ditch. Comparison with similar sites suggested that the enclosure may have related to Late Iron Age stock control. Several apparently isolated features were also identified, the most noteworthy of which was a small pit containing Bronze Age pottery. It was recommended that the features should be preserved in situ where possible, and that excavation and recording should be carried out where preservation could not be achieved. [Au(adp)]
