Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the groundworks of an extension which lay on the platform of a moated enclosure. There was no evidence of the original occupation surface within the footing trenches. Debris within the topsoil suggested that the upper soils had been disturbed and possibly truncated removing most of the evidence of the earlier building that would have stood there. From within the topsoil five small sherds of medieval pottery date to 12th-14th century were collected and oyster shells and fine crushed mortar was observed. A single deep posthole or pit was recorded cutting the clay. The base of a large oak post was found in the excavated spoil. The post had been skilfully worked, the end was sawn and it had been facetted so that it was octagonal in profile. [Au(adp)] |
