Abstract: |
Three sections were partially excavated through the Spades Mire earthwork to the north of Berwick-upon-Tweed. The site was a SAM and the work was designed to locate a faulty pipe, known to run along the ditch, with a minimum of disturbance. Two archaeologically significant ditch fills were encountered. The upper contained 15th-16th century roof tile as well as residual 13th-14th century pottery fragments. No artefacts were recovered from the lower fill, which was a clean silty clay typical of weathering and silting in an open ditch. Although limited, the results corroborated suggestions that the earthwork was originally related to the 13th century Scottish burgh, and perhaps altered during the comprehensive 16th century reconstruction of the town's defences.
