Abstract: |
<summary>A single trench was excavated to investigate an area adjacent to an area explored by a small excavation in 1983, which recorded part of a timber raft carrying the Roman road from Lincoln to Doncaster across a marshy area. Topsoil was found to contain a very high concentration of medieval and early modern pottery. The timber causeway, from which a dendrochronological sample was obtained, was in a variable state of preservation; it lay directly upon natural peat, with a mid-brown iron-stained sand containing small pebbles and Samian flecks either side of the timber raft providing make-up for the road. The road metalling lay above the sand and comprised the same matrix, but with larger and more frequent stones. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
