Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development identified that it was crossed by the projected line of Roman Stane Street, remains of which had been recorded to the north-east and the south-west. Many further sites had been recorded in the surrounding area, includin those of prehistoric, Roman and Saxon settlements and artefacts. The Roman town of Ewell lay to the south-west, and the site of Cuddington medieval village also lay nearby. Cartographic evidence revealed that the proposal area had been used as arable land in the 19th century. It was concluded that the site had a high archaeoogical potential. Trial trenching was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
