Abstract: |
Observations of underpinning work within the bailey of Southampton Castle revealed the top of the natural cliff to be about 17m east of the west wall of the outer bailey of the castle. Between the bailey wall and the cliff there appeared to be a gap that had been used for tipping household rubbish. Dateable evidence recovered indicated that the hollow between the wall and cliff had been open and in use for this purpose from at least the late medieval period right up to the formation of gardens on this site in the early 19th century. In the second half of the 19th century the present terrace had been constructed on this soft fill. [Au] |
