Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out as part of a programme of archaeological work, designed to investigate the potential educational and leisure use of a medieval moated site which was a SAM. The evaluation was focused on ponds to the south of the moat. Waterlogged organic deposits were located in both the west and east ponds, the latter providing the most extensive range of material, including pollen, plant remains and insects. This environmental evidence indicated a wooded landscape associated with damp ground in the medieval period. There was little evidence of arable farming at this time. There were indications that trees had later been less widespread, and that woodland pasture had developed, together with increased arable cultivation. Standing water had lain in the vicinity at this time. An 18th century industrial phase was represented by a spread of waste from the coal and iron industry which had been widespread in the area. Seventeen 18th century pottery sherds were recovered. It was concluded that although medieval features had not been found on the raised area between the ponds, it was clear that human activity had been causing an increasing impact upon the landscape, and had included the creation of ponds, probably in the 12th or 13th century. The evaluation had demonstrated the potential of the ponds, and similar features such as the moat, for the survival of well-preserved environmental evidence. [Au(adp)]
