Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of a proposed development. Two trenches revealed a sequence of medieval features and deposits dating from the mid 13th to later 14th century. This included evidence for at least one building comprising chalk rubble walls, a hearth and a burnt occupation horizon. Medieval pits, both pre-dating and post-dating the building were present. Medieval remains also included a possible managed water-course and a large stone and brick wall of 14th century date. Some remains had been substantially truncated by a massive rectangular pit, which had been backfilled in the late 18th century and was likely to have related to one of the tanneries known through documentary sources to have occupied the site. Further late 19th and early 20th century structures were found, including brick walls, a brick floor, a drain and a well. [Au(adp)] |
