Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of three proposed development areas identified that one site, Area 3, contained Aston Hall, an early 17th century mansion surrounded by a Grade II Registered Park. The Hall and its lodge and stables were Grade I Listed Buildings, whilst the park, originally laid out in the 1610s, contained the remains of 17th, 18th and 20th century formal gardens. Area 3 also lay within a Conservation Area. The proposed development would affect the setting of the park and Listed Buildings. A Roman coin had been found within Area 3, and a road along its northern edge lay on the former line of a tramway. It was noted that any remains of the tramway and of 17th century farm buildings which had lain to the north could be recorded by a watching brief if revealed during development. Area 1 contained no archaeological sites, although it lay adjacent to the site of an early bridge across the River Tame. It was suggested that any potential palaeoenvironmental remains in this area could be recorded by a watching brief. Area 2 covered part of the site of the medieval village of Aston, and lay within a Conservation Area. It aso lay adjacent to Aston Parish Church, a Grade II LIsted Building. A derelict late 19th century tavern on the site was considered to be of minor interest. It was recommended that an evaluation should be carried out to determine the significance of any surviving remains of the medieval village, and that a watching brief could record any potential deposits relating to the former course of the River Tame.
