Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken on behalf of the Civil Engineering Consultancy of Hereford & Worcester County Council. The project was designed to meet stages 1 and 2 of an environmental assessment for the proposed route of the Wyre Piddle Bypass. The aims of the archaeological assessment were to undertake a detailed desk-top assessment and preliminary fieldwalking survey to locate and identify all known sites of archaeological interest within the 300m wide corridor centred on the bypass. A Neolithic polished stone axe may be evidence for long distance trade from this area at this date. The flint assemblage, although small, may be derived from a settlement associated with known Bronze Age funerary sites in the vicinity (HWCM 3255, 7985 and 7986). The Roman artefact distributions probably represent a non-villa settlement or settlements occurring at intervals on the river gravels in the valley of the Avon. Two other Romano-British rural settlements in the vicinity are considered to be of national significance and are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. There is potential within the group for detailed study of Roman rural settlement, land use and economy.[AIP] |
