Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of three houses. The site was adjacent to a conservation area and Mill Road had several Listed Buildings, although the house on the site was built after 1932, with later additions. The cartographic sources showed that the area had been farmland until relatively recently and there was no evidence for extensive disturbance or destruction of archaeological deposits. At a general level of analysis, there were a number of findspots of prehistoric date in the vicinity and there was some possibility of deposits of these periods being present on the site. However, a more significant consideration was that this study had revealed that the proposal site lay close to an area of high archaeological potential represented by the historic core of the town. Mill Road, to the west, appeared on the earliest maps that showed some detail and could have defined the periphery of the historic core at the height of the medieval expansion of the town. It was not clear if Mill Road was merely an undeveloped trackway or acted as a 'back lane' providing access to the rears of properties fronting St Peter's Street to the west, with farmland to the east. There was a small possibility that it was an integral part of the medieval suburbs of the town. If the site did lie within the periphery of the historic core of the town, then this raised its importance in terms of its potential to provide information on the chronology of the expansion and contraction of the settled area, with reference to the economic fortunes of the town. The report confirmed the opinion that the impact of this development proposal on any below-ground archaeological deposits should be further examined by means of a field evaluation. [Au(adp)]
