Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken of the now decommissioned Royal Naval Armaments Depot as part of a feasibility study being carried out for Allerdale Borough Council. The assessment identified a total of 24 sites in and around the depot. Most of these dated to the 19th century or later and related to mines that occupied the site before the construction of the deposit in 1938. Earlier land-use was represented by the presence of a medieval field system and areas of ridge and furrow. A possible artificial mound was also identified. The depot itself had been extensively recorded by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England. The mining sites and field system were recorded by the OS. Therefore no further work was recommended for these sites. In the event of the possible mound being threatened by development then further work was recommended. [Au(abr)] |
