Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken on a proposed development. A trench 20m by 2m was excavated and the remains of Salvin's Cotton Mill, constructed in 1796 and destroyed by fire in 1804 were revealed. Deposits relating to the mill's construction, destruction and levelling were encountered. There were no medieval or earlier deposits within the area excavated, although these might have survived at a level lower than 1.5m below the present ground surface. Some medieval and later pottery fragments were recovered from garden-type soils below the mill. [Au(abr)] |
