Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the construction of three new structures and carparking, four lakes and extensive landscaping. The report concluded that the archaeological potential of the site could be described as moderate in terms of the material that had been recorded on the SMR. There was, though, a considerable degree of uncertainty in this assessment. No archaeological material had been found specifically from the site, although this was as likely to have been due to a lack of archaeological survey during earlier phases of development, as to an absence of deposits. Evidence relating to earlier activity varied in period, although the archaeological artefacts appeared to be individual finds, and not associated with a wider area of activity. This could imply that there was limited settled occupation of this area, prior to the early medieval period, and that the area was exploited simply for its natural resources. However, in apparently similar locations c.2.0-2.5km to the north, on the lowest terrace and floodplain of the River Wey at Brooklands and Wey Manor Farm, detailed fieldwork in advance of development had revealed considerable evidence for prehistoric, Roman and to a lesser extent, medieval settlement. Such evidence had yet to be revealed in this stretch of the Wey valley, but the possibility could not currently be ruled out. Systematic fieldwork would be able to clarify this. The early cartographic evidence revealed that the development area lay beyond the nucleus of any earlier settlements, and in a landscape which comprised a mixture of arable and common land. It was likely that Shepard's Farm, named on the First Edition OS map, was also the property shown on Rocque's map, and was possibly a farm that had been established in the medieval period. It was considered that a substantial proportion of the areas subject to redevelopment had escaped development to an extent where any archaeological evidence that may have existed had been destroyed. It was therefore recommended that such areas required further testing of their archaeological potential before destruction by development. [Au(adp)] |
