Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of an access road, car park and sports pavilion. The only features revealed during the ground works were almost certainly of post-medieval origin. These were principally land drains which were likely to have remained in use into the recent past. The single post hole found adjacent to one of these drains may have been part of a field fence, with other examples removed by the earlier episode of grading. A single piece of burnt flint was of little significance. The earlier grading of the south-western part of the leisure complex may have contributed to the largely negative results of the watching brief. The more substantial features which tended to characterised settlements pre-dating the post-medieval period, such as deeper pits or ditches, were certainly absent from the access road, sports pavilion and south-western half of the car park. This suggested that there were no important archaeological remains within the south-western part of the leisure complex. [Au(adp)]
