Abstract: |
An assessment was undertaken ahead of the conversion of engineering works to a new use. It was determined that the development area had the potential to answer important questions about the beginnings of Gateshead and its subsequent development. Any information gained in the Pipewell area was considered to have implications for the understanding and management of other historic areas of the town. In view of the lack of documentary evidence for the early medieval period, this information could only be gained through archaeological excavation. [Au(abr)] |
