Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of an extension to offices in order to investigate the possibility of archaeological remains surviving from a Benedictine abbey which occupied much of the site until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. The results of the monitoring were not conclusive, but they tended to suggest that there was a north-south feature, possibly a ditch, at the eastern end of the footing trenches, which could have dated from the earlier monastic occupation of the site.
