Abstract: |
Three archaeological trial trenches, totalling 30m in length, were excavated by machine within a plot of land running north from Wish Street in Rye. Although lying outside the historic walled centre of Rye, the site was considered to have some potential for containing archaeological deposits. The trenching revealed that the site was capped with thick layers of hardcore overlying a former garden/orchard soil. One wall footing of sandstone and brick was encountered which was identified on the 1859 map, but was not shown on any earlier surveys. No other features or artefacts of archaeological interest were identified. Historic map evidence suggests that the site lay within the margins of the river until the 18th century. [Au] |
