Abstract: |
A baseline cultural heritage assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development. The main findings of the assessment were that while prehistoric and early medieval settlement at Morpeth was possible, there was no record of settlement there until the 11th century. The principal building on the site in the early 19th century was Orde House. There was no record of any industrial practices being carried out there until the establishment of a bottling plant in the early 20th century, but the possibility that such activities occurred there in the medieval or post-medieval periods could not be dismissed. Orde House was removed to make way for a garage complex in the late 1960s. A further archaeological evaluation as recommended. [Au(adp)] |
