Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out and sixteen trenches were excavated. To the south of the farm buildings a sequence of features dating to the medieval period and post-medieval period were found. The fields to the west of the farm complex also contained features of medieval date, which again related to the occupation of the priory. These included pits and gullies sealed by medieval to modern ploughsoil, but no evidence for stone masonry buildings/structures. The trenches excavated in this field also found some undated features which may have been of an earlier pre-priory phase of activity. Also the foundations of a medieval wall were found and in another trench evidence revealed substantial robbed walls, which were interpreted to be parts of the original priory complex. These were dismantled during the mid-17th century. This evaluation had shown that in addition to the Grade I Listed building, the site also contained below ground medieval remains relating to the Cistercian nunnery. [Au(adp)] |
