Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a planning condition for redevelopment. The SMR suggested good archaeological potential. Numerous prehistoric artefacts had been recovered; some associated with what appeared to be old river channels, implying that weapons could have been deposited in parts of the river. It was therefore possible that buried river channels existed within the site. The location of the River Terrace Geology, close to the Thames, suggested that it was the type of place that was favoured by prehistoric settlers, as a high level of subsistence could be maintained in this fertile terrain. Many occupation sites had been discovered in similar locations along the course of the Thames. A further indication of human activity in this area was the high number of crop marks indicating ring ditches. The cartographic evidence indicated that the site had been agricultural land during the 18th and 19th century. [Au(adp)] |
