Abstract: |
Archaeological observations of structural engineer's test pits were made on the site of the proposed Ivo Fuchs Centre, Market Cross, Malmesbury, in February 1996. The observations demonstrated that quarrying recognised by an earlier evaluation extended to depths in excess of 3m across much of the site. The edge of the quarry against previously recognised medieval mortar foundations was re-established, further clarifying the extent of those intact deposits. Near to the Market Cross frontage in the southern part of the site a probable in situ burial of Late Saxon or medieval date was revealed in an area where the later quarrying/disturbance was less deep. It was realised that despite the disturbance there was the potential for survival of other burials along a narrow strip adjacent to the street frontage. [Au(abr)] |
