Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to the proposed development of the site. The site lay within an area of high archaeological potential, but did not contain any SAM's or Listed Buildings. There were no reliable SMR entries for the site, but there were several definite entries immediately adjacent to the development area. The site lay on terraced gravel's, near to the River Rom, in an environment that may have been suitable for prehistoric habitation. The site was situated north of the medieval strip settlement along Hornchurch Road, known as Havering Well and appeared likely to have been devoted to agricultural uses until the late 19th century, when the first manufacturing works on the site were built. Given the possibility of prehistoric activity, it was thought that an archaeological evaluation of the area, involving limited trenching, may be required as part of the planning process. [Au(abr)] |
