Abstract: |
Palaeoenvironmental sampling and a watching brief were carried out during the excavation of a pipe trench at the site of a new cinema. Mesolithic sites had been recorded in the surrounding area, and a relict water channel containing Mesolithic peat deposits had been identified at the site itself. Recent earthworks representing field boundaries, drains or possibly a water meadow system had also been observed, and human bones had previously been found within peat from the site. During the watching brief, no archaeological features or artefacts were observed. Column samples of the alluvium and peat sequence were recovered for analysis; preliminary results indicated a predominantly early post-glacial date. Bulk samples were also taken, but no molluscs, seeds or insect remains were present. [AIP] |
