Abstract:
It was proposed to redevelop the site as a high quality business park in an extensive parkland setting, and incorporating new film studios. Very little systematic archaeological work had taken place in the vicinity. The spread of chance finds and the density of archaeological deposits inferred from work in other parts of Hertfordshire suggested that the Leavesden site might well have contained surviving deposits and landscape features from the Iron Age and Roman periods. This was confirmed by archaeological work to the east of the application area where archaeological work had revealed significant Iron Age and early Roman settlement activity, as well as medieval deposits. The airfield also held a significant place in aviation history, as one of the principal production sites for the Mosquito aircraft. Some of the surviving aircraft factory buildings themselves were therefore also potentially of aviation history and architectural significance, as were several surviving pillboxes. A range of below and above ground features were known or may have survived within and around the airfield, which might have been affected by the redevelopment of the area as currently proposed.
