Abstract: |
Archaeological evaluation at the site of the proposed Kemerton Water Reclamation Works was carried out on behalf of Severn Trent Water. The site lies in an area of sustained occupation dating from the prehistoric period to the present day. A range of deposits were excavated and recorded, including settlement remains and ridge and furrow earthworks. The earliest phase of activity consisted of settlement remains, including post and stakeholes, structural slots, pits and part of a sunken-featured building or "grubenhaus". Associated with these deposits was a small ecofactual assemblage that included well preserved molluscan and plant remains, and a small but significant artefactual assemblage that broadly dated the settlement from the 5th-8th century. Settlement sites of this date are very rare in the region, and at the time of the evaluation only a single comparable site was known in the county.[AIP] |
