Abstract: |
An evaluation was required prior to the determination of any planning application on the site, as it lay within the fortified Iron Age settlement of Salmonsbury Camp. Trench two recorded archaeological features; these consisted of four ditches (one dated to the medieval period, but also contained residual Roman artefacts), a Roman ditch terminus and a probable medieval pit buried beneath 1.30m of post medieval deposits. These features suggested that multi-phase activity may have survived within the area of the proposed development. [Au(adp)] \r\n\r\nHowever the evaluation has also established that extensive landscaping has taken place to the west of the existing structure, and this appears to have truncated any potential deposits down to the alluvial deposit and the natural gravels. |
