| Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken as a planning condition. The SMR suggested that the archaeological potential was high. A variety of finds had been retrieved from the vicinity, spanning the Lower Palaeolithic to medieval periods and beyond. The site was topographically advantageous with an abundance of natural resources. Its possible that a Roman road ran along the line of West Street and evidence of flake-tool manufacturing supports these theories. No archaeological evidence of occupation for the Saxon period had been retrieved, although residual sherds of pottery were collected. Some evidence indicated activity from the 13th century onwards, with the land, which sloped down to the river, being terraced in the 14th century. The historic maps showed buildings occupying the front plots of the site, whilst the rest remained as gardens until the late 19th century. Later developments might have reduced the likelihood of archaeological deposits. [Au(adp)] |
