Abstract: |
Excavation of a 25m long trial trench revealed stratified deposits up to 3 m in depth. Evidence from this trench and other previous excavations in this part of Ipswich suggested that spoil had been deliberately imported into this area of the town in the later medieval period. A thick layer of Anglo-Saxon and medieval top soil, lying below this layer had a high organic content, and may suggest that this formerly low lying area of the town was prone to flooding. Although no evidence had been recovered to date the raising of the ground surface across this part of the town, it certainly predated the construction of the adjacent, predominantly 17th century, timber framed buildings, whose footings corresponded closely to present street levels.
