Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposal to redevelop the site. The assessment recorded that the village of Welwyn lay at the centre of an extensive 'complex' of Late Iron Age and Roman remains, consisting of high status burials, villas and evidence of widespread agricultural activity, suggesting that the area formed a focus of settlement or activity. Documentary evidence indicated that Welwyn possessed a high-status Minster church by the 10th century, and the village remained an important and strategically-sited focus in the landscape throughout the Middle Ages and into the modern period. No archaeological remains were known from the assessment site, though the projected line of a Roman road, preserved in the alignment of School Lane lay immediately adjacent, and several sites were known in close proximity. The area remained open as part of the grounds of the rectory until the late 19th century, when St Mary's church hall was erected on the site. The hall, constructed in pre-fabricated materials, was demolished in 1968 and replaced by the building currently occupying the site. [Au(adp)]
