Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the site identified that the area had been part of the estates of St. James's Priory and remained in agricultural use, and later horticultural use, until the end of the 18th century. Most was then built up, but a rectangular plot was brought into use as a burial ground. Half of this plot lay beneath the present site. After 50 years of use, the burial ground was closed in 1854. It had probably never been cleared of burials. These were expected to provide an important historical and archaeological resource for the first half of the 19th century. The houses over the majority of the site were cleared after the Second World War, and the site had more recently been in use as a scrap yard. [Au(adp)] |
