Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed redevelopment of the site, which lay within the ancient alluvial floodplain of the river Thames. Periods of inundation and transgression had occasioned intermittent settlement since prehistoric times. Concentrated Roman and medieval settlement was confined to raised gravel islands, but with drainage efforts and population expansion during the 15th and 16th centuries, activity probably spread west along the river margin. Evidence suggested that the area remained as a series of mud flats and sand islands. Maps for the area indicated that the site formed part of the demesne fields of the manor of Paris Garden. Substantial urban development occurred after the construction of Blackfriars Bridge in 1769, though building activity was confined to the eastern end of Stamford Street by a lack of adequate drainage. The site was not developed until the first two decades of the 19th century, when minor industrial manufactories and trades occupied the area. The building currently occupying the site was found to incorporate elements of an 1820s town house, which had been extended and renovated, principally during the later 19th century and 1920s. Some cellaring and levelling had taken place, reducing any existing archaeological potential, particularly in the south of the site. [Au]
