Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was carried out in order to reconsolidate the trackway for display and to identify the track bed construction and later alterations. A 37m length of wagonway was excavated and revealed that the track bed consisted of small coal ballast constructed onto the side of the slope. Substantial amounts of ballast had been dumped down the slope to level and widen the available area and create an embankment. The fieldwork demonstrated that the original track of wagonway dating to around 1830 had been lifted and the sleepers redeposited on the western side of the embankment. Additional disturbed sleeper blocks were recovered from the ballast of a later way and from the fill of a substantial modern drain running north to south through the excavated area. [Au(adp)] |
