Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it was situated within the former precinct of Guildford Friary, although it lay some distance from known buildings and may have partly occupied meadow land. Other unlocated structures could conceivably have lain in the vicinity of the site. Archaeological remains recorded in the surrounding area included Mesolithic flints, Saxon cemeteries, pits containing medieval and 17th century pottery, and the historic town of Guildford itself. It was noted that the construction of buildings at the proposal site in the 19th century would have caused some ground disturbance, but it was concluded that traces of buildings associated with the medieval friary could nonetheless survive. A watching brief during development works was recommended. [Au(adp)]
