Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed route of an aviation fuel pipeline identified that a total of 29 sites of archaeological interest lay within the study area, which comprised a corridor of 500m on either side of the proposed line. Of these sites, 12 lay within c. 100m of the route. Scattered finds of prehistoric date had been recovered from the area, including flint flakes and a Palaeolithic handaxe. The principle Romano-British activity related to a possible villa site and other finds in the vicinity of Pendell Farm. However, much of the land crossed by the pipeline in this area had previously been disturbed by quarrying, suggesting that the potential for archaeological remains in the vicinity was low. It was considered that elements of the modern field pattern, including parish boundaries, would incorporate remnants of the former medieval landscape. The majority of boundaries crossed by the route would have been in existence for at least 150 years. Those of particular note could require recording during construction, although any impacts on the boundaries would be minimal. Two former sites of medieval settlement lay close to the proposed route, whilst the sites of mills, lime-kilns, brick-kilns and clay pits in the surrounding area provided evidence of the post-medieval industrial landscape. It was concluded that there appeared to be no necessity for a field evaluation at this stage, but that a watching brief should be carried out during construction of the pipeline. [AIP]
