Abstract: |
Part of the restoration programme at St Swithin's Church consisted of the laying of a new drainage system at the east side of the church, as well as the removal of topsoil immediately surrounding the north side of the church. The former involved the excavation of a single trench and soakaway under archaeological supervision, while the latter involved involved the relatively shallow excavation of deposits along the north walls of the tower, nave and chancel to allow for re-pointing. As a result of the work it was shown that the church had been constructed on natural deposits and that burials were numerous although unmarked. Most of the groundworks undertaken were shallow so did not disturb burials, three were, however uncovered within the soakaway. [Au] |
