Abstract:
A Stage 1 rapid assessment was undertaken of Claypit Lane. The site was an old clay extraction pit and was occupied from at least 1836 by a pottery, although earlier structures were likely to have been present. The pottery continued in production, making not only earthernwares but also clay pipes and bricks until 1904, when it went bankrupt. After this there was apparently little activity there until the present range of buildings were constructed. The evidence from 19th and early 20th century maps demonstrated that the majority of the structures associated with the pottery were in areas that did not contain modern buildings. Additionally those structures that were covered today might have survived archaeologically given the lightweight construction of some of the modern features. Furthermore, the most westerly portion of the site, although devoid of pottery buildings, was an area that was likely to have been backfilled with production wasters and debris. Any proposed development of the site may have a severe impact on the archaeological deposits and it was essential that this be taken into consideration by any future development of the site.
