Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of a single dwelling. The assessment found that the site lay within the core of the historic settlement of Brill, and close to an area of widespread industrial disturbance caused by the local medieval and post-medieval pottery industry. No archaeological remains were known from the assessment site, though areas nearby had yielded evidence spanning the Bronze Age to post-medieval periods. During the 11th century the settlement gained favour as a royal hunting lodge and palace, and the evolution of the village followed the rise and decline of royal favour and industrial activity. It was likely that the assessment site had been continuously occupied since the medieval period, though the level of intensity could not be ascertained from documentary sources alone. Surviving maps suggested that the area had formed the yards and out-buildings of the Sun Hotel since at least the early 19th century and consequently some remains associated with nearby occupation may have survived.
