Abstract: |
The assessment identified that evidence relating to earlier activity from the surrounding area was relatively sparse although varied in date. A possible prehistoric barrow and Roman building foundations to the west of the site and evidence of the early manorial site to the north close to the 12th century church in Banstead. Early cartographic evidence revealed that the proposed development site was arable land until the construction of The Lodge, shown on the 1870 OS map. Few houses or buildings were marked along the Potters Lane/ Turnpike Road, within close proximity of the development site, and it was therefore unlikely that any settlements of medieval or later date were located in this area, at this relatively short distance from Banstead village.
