Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which lay in an Archaeological Priority Area. Excavations at a nearby site had revealed substantial areas of complex strata surviving up to 0.8m deep despite the impact of existing basements. Traces of middle Saxon structures and evidence of a considerable amount of post-medieval pitting and refuse disposal had been recorded. During the evaluation, three main phases of activity were identified, with the latest comprising recent demolition and levelling. Post-medieval activity was represented by the remains of 18th century houses, quarry pits, rubbish pits and a buried soil horizon. This phase was pre-dated by a series of pits or linear features. Medieval pottery and ceramic building material and a range of post-medieval finds were recovered. [AIP] |
