Abstract: |
Following the completion of a desk-based assessment of the archaeological potential of the proposed development site, a field evaluation was undertaken. Evaluation trenches revealed the presence of a number of subsoil features, many of which contained pottery of prehistoric and early Romano-British date. The features, which were primarily pits, post holes and gullies were considered to relate to settlement activity in the area. This information, along with the earlier discovery of artefacts of Late Iron Age and Romano-British date in the vicinity provided strong evidence for the presence of an extensive and important settlement, possibly associated with a 'round' enclosure.
