Abstract: |
The eastern facing section in Bay 2 contained the truncated remains of pitched sandstones set in clay., with small fragments of horizontally placed sandstones, representing the internal foundation and flagged floor of the Roman granary building that had been excavated previously. This watching brief identified and located intact Roman features, artefacts and ground surfaces. The discoveries demonstrate that remains of Benwell fort survived beneath the modern housing estate.
