Abstract: |
The potential survival of several archaeologically significant features within an area proposed for sand, gravel and clay extraction was identified. Prehistoric and Roman field systems of 'nuclear' and 'brick-work' type were known to exist to the south and south-west of the site and there was a strong probability that these continued into the proposed development area. The proximity of a Roman road, on the western boundary of the site, raised the possibility of the existence of contemporary burials, and peat deposits on the eastern margin of the site indicated potential for the survival of organic residues.
