Abstract:
A desk-based study with a site visit was carried out ahead of a proposed development to assess the archaeological potential. The principle interests in the site were, the possibility that remains of medieval house plots might survive alongside the ancient thoroughfare of Front Street; and that the proposed development lay close to the site of two Romano-British burials discovered in 1975, and may therefore have lain within the boundary of a more extensive cemetery. No positive evidence was available for settlement on the street frontage during the medieval period, although reference to cottages in the 19th century, now demolished, may relate to ancient dwellings. The presence of a series of possible medieval lynchets through the site suggested that formerly lay within arable fields and therefore unlikely to have been settled in that way. Evidence was obtained for the presence of a dovecote on the site, recorded on maps into the 20th century. There was no obvious field evidence for the site which was possibly of medieval date. No further evidence for a Romano-British cemetery was forthcoming, but if it did exist on the site it would have been buried beneath the lynchet deposits. [Au(adp)]
