Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a former mill site proposed for development was undertaken. Work was to include conversion into flats, and some demolition. The mill house attached to the mill building at the site was of 17th century origin; the building itself was Grade II Listed. The mill had probably been a hammer mill in the 18th century, and had been a paper mill from 1730 to the 1860s. Three further mill sites lay nearby, whilst evidence of earlier activity in the area comprised finds of a Mesolithic scraper and a Bronze Age mace head. It was concluded that the site had a low archaeological potential, and that the development would remove a number of modern and relatively unimportant structures. No further archaeological involvement with the development was recommended. [AIP] |
