Abstract:
An archaeological trench evaluation was undertaken as a condition of planning permission for the construction of a new business park. An earlier desk-based assessment for the development area identified that the main archaeological interest in the site was the possible presence of a limekiln of 18th century (or earlier) date, marked as a fieldname 'Limekiln Ground' on early 19th century maps. A subsequent geophysical survey in this area recorded subsurface anomalies that may have related to this and other archaeological activity. This evaluation comprised the machine excavation of 61 trenches totalling c.2.3km in length, with each trench 1.8m wide. The work identified two areas of archaeological activity, the first consisting of three shallow linear features of possible prehistoric origin in the south-west corner of the site (plot two) and the second comprising one large linear feature on the eastern side of the site (plot four) that was probably post-medieval in origin. The remaining trenches revealed either largely negative results or modern land drains. [Au(adp)]
