Abstract: |
An assessment/evaluation of land required for the development of a motorway service station on the M40, involving fieldwalking and geophysical surveys, had failed to reveal any features of archaeological significance; a scatter of Roman pottery sherds and tile fragments collected from the site probably derived from manuring of fields rather than settlement [see separate AIP entry/record]. A watching brief was undertaken during the development, following the removal of topsoil, and again the results proved negative. Only a few fragments of tile were discovered, and those were mainly 19th century in origin; a single fragment of tile could be attributed to the Roman period. The watching brief also revealed that linear anomalies located in the geophysical survey were natural geological features (outcrops of bedrock). The observation exercise confirmed the results of the fieldwalking and geophysical surveys, that there was no significant archaeology present in the development area.[AIP] |
