Abstract: |
Five test-pits were excavated to evaluate the archaeological implications of the proposed redevelopment of the site of Greenland Mills. Four of the test-pits revealed that in the western and central portions of the site the river floodplain originally extended as far as the present spinal access road. The alluvial deposits were overlain by deliberate dumps of rubble or clinker and ash of post-medieval date (18th-19th century). The fifth test-pit indicated that only a very thin lens of superficial deposits overlay what would have been the 19th-century quarry floor. [AIP] |
