Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation and watching brief were undertaken. The excavation spanned the footprint of a proposed extension intended to form part of a restaurant. The watching brief was undertaken during excavation for services. A number of medieval features and deposits were encountered during the investigation, predominantly during the watching brief phase. These included the remains of buildings dating back to the 12th century, with significant deposits of 12th to 14th century dumping to the rear. The modern property boundaries were seen to follow those of medieval date, formed by limestone walls. Above the medieval dumps were the remains of early post-medieval buildings, including a bake-house or kitchen, which contained two successive brick ovens. These buildings were followed by at least two buildings of 18th century date, which presumably provided service ranges and workshops for the street frontage shop. A mid 19th century terrace of houses had replaced these, which had by the early 20th century become workshops themselves. [Au(abr)] |
