Abstract:
Archaeological excavations were carried out in order to evaluate the nature of surviving remains within and immediately adjacent to the Vicar's Pele, recently designated a SAM. Two evaluation trenches were opened, one inside the south-west corner of the pele, the other outside of the north-west corner. In the first, a number of features were uncovered, all of them recently constructed or consolidated. Stone flagging appeared to overlie a modern concrete surface in part of the floor space, while possible traces of an older flagged floor were also present. In the second trench a modern concrete floor, probably part of a dwelling present on the site until c.1950, was encountered at a depth of 0.35m. Three remains of a brick wall visible in the east facing section were identified as an internal dividing wall within this structure. It was concluded that the structures and deposits encountered during the excavations were predominantly of 20th century origin or modification. It followed, therefore, that the works proposed by the PPTWG in and around the pele were highly unlikely to interfere with medieval or other significant archaeological remains. It was recommended on the basis of evaluation that in addition to urgent consolidation works on part of the upstanding walls of the tower, the floor should be cleared of debris and provided with stone flagging. This seemed to have been its most recent surface - although further excavation in the east party of the tower would have to be conducted to show this conclusively - and there was some evidence to suggest that earlier flooring was of this nature.
